Open - Back and Closed - Back Headphones
Open Back and Closed Back Headphones
In this blog we are looking on the two different types of headphones and its uses. If you are a beginner in Music Production I prefer mixing in headphones which is much better and cheaper rather than mixing in monitors. Headphones are very user - friendly because even if we are away from studio or traveling, we can still get our work done. The disadvantages Headphones have is that after long usage our ears will get completely fatigue especially in a hot and humid conditions, and also there is stereo imaging issues as when we solo and hear the right side of the headphones, we can only hear the right side on our right ear. But in Monitors when we solo the right side, we can hear that on our right ear and a little bit on our left ear as well because the sound will hit and bounce back in different directions.
Now we are going to look on two different type of Headphones. Open - Back and Closed - Back Headphones.
Open and Closed Back Headphones serve different purposes. If you want more ventilation and a more natural sounding, Open Headphones might be better. However for on-the-go and not-as-private situations Closed Back Headphones do a better job controlling Sound Design. Most of us including me uses the Closed - Back Headphones because we all don't want to hear the outside noise while listening to music. Closed - Back Headphones does this by creating a seal around your ear to isolate the noise and separate the inside from the outside.
But in a Studio or in some other quiet solo listening environment you don't need that isolation between yourself and the outside noise because there is no outside noise. In Open Back the back of the headphones are literally open. There is no barrier between the drivers and the outside world. Open Back has much more natural sound as we will feel that the music is coming from the room around you instead of being played in your head.
The major drawback of Open Backed Headphones are sound leak because there is no barrier between the inside and outside, the vibration of the diaphragm pushes audio both inward and outwards. So if someone's sitting next to you it'll sound like you're wearing many speakers on your head. They will be able to hear everything you are listening to.
So now you guys basically know all the differences between Open Back and Closed Back Headphones and all of their advantages and disadvantages. Hope you learned something new, see you all on my next Blog.
