What is MIDI? How it Works?

MIDI KEYBOARD AND ITS USE

What is MIDI Keyboard and how does it works? MIDI stands for Musical Instrument Digital Interface. It is and Interface between Musical Instruments and Computer. MIDI was invented in early 1980s as a way to let different instruments communicate with each other. MIDI helps us to communicate wit computers so we can use DAWs like FL Studio, Logic Pro X, Ableton, Studio One.. to send information to these devices.

A MIDI has 3 inputs.

1. MIDI Out

2. MIDI In

3. MIDI Thru

What MIDI Out does is it sends a MIDI signal out of the device and MIDI In takes a MIDI signal inside the device and a MIDI Thru allows it to pass to another device. So basically how it works is when you press a Key or Pad it creates a MIDI message and the message is sent to the device which it is connected. MIDI is just a language, the controller speaks the language and any one who understand it can react to those messages. So you know what else can speak MID, your DAW (Digital Audio Workstation).

When you are recording MIDI in your DAW, when you're playing along and it seems like you're playing and instrument; those are just the messages that are being recorded. When you see those little squares, those are called midi blocks. The beginning of the block is the MIDI on message and the end of the bock is the MIDI off message and the third message is which MIDI note was played.

There is a lot of messages that you can send with MIDI, so you can really control Instruments in a lot of different ways. And also in you DAW, there is
a pencil tool so you can write them and there are graphs so you can draw them.

It goes on and on and it gets interesting day by day if we keep on working with these DAWs. If you have any doubts please comment below and I will happily respond to your questions.
